Kyrios
The fish (Ichthys) was presumably used as a sign of recognition among early Christians. When a Christian met a stranger whose loyalty they needed to ascertain, they would draw one of the arches that make up the ichthys in the sand. Thus, early Christians used it as a sign of recognition to indicate the Savior.
In the Old Testament, the image of the fish is sometimes linked to the uncertainty of life: "For man also does not know his time: Like fish taken in a cruel net, like birds caught in a snare, so the sons of men are snared in an evil time, when it falls suddenly upon them" (Ecclesiastes 9:12).
